Robert Thornton defeated Ted Hankey in his opening group game at the Grand Slam of Darts, killing of ‘The Count’ with a 5-0 whitewash in Wolverhampton.
The reigning UK Open champion shot straight to the top of Group B, ahead of Sunday evening’s clash with Michael van Gerwen.
“The scoring wasn’t great but my finishing was spot on,” said Thornton.
“I was confident of winning but to beat Ted 5-0 is a big boost.
“I enjoyed the win and I’ll rest up now ready for tomorrow night.”
Thornton posted double ten to get off the mark before hitting double twelve to break Hankey’s throw.
The Scotsman pinned double top to open up a three leg lead.
That became four when his first maximum set up 76, which he took out in three darts.
‘The Thorn’ missed the bull for a stunning 170 finish but completed the whitewash anyway, hitting double 15 to take the two points.
